This information only applies to version 4.0 of the Afterdark series. Other versions of Afterdark will not install on Windows XP.
From your CD locate the ADE folder.
Copy all of this folder to your harddisk
Locate and edit the setup.inf file in the new folder
Locate the section of the file that looks like the following:
FileCount=8 File1=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,12592,4.0.0.0,5,folder.afi,1,3,AD2.afi,, File2=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,13536,4.0.0.0,6,folder.afi,1,3,Disney.afi,, File3=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,12560,4.0.0.0,7,folder.afi,1,3,MAD.afi,, File4=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,12400,4.0.0.0,8,folder.afi,1,3,Marvel.afi,, File5=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,12976,4.0.0.0,9,folder.afi,1,3,StarTrek.afi,,
The file count might vary typically the value is 7 or 8. Change the FileCount to be one less.
e.g. For my example above
FileCount=7
Run the setup.exe from the ADE folder.
If you are successful then you should have all of your favourite antics from Bad Dog, Super Guy's Crazy thoughts and the musical Flying Toasters
Some people have reported that the After Dark tab does not appear correctly on the display screen (see above). If this is the case with your installation then select the settings tab and press the advanced button. The Afterdark controls may appear here.
If you choose Fish World, the Art Critic or Rain Forest modules then these cause problems with the options and may lock up, you will need to restart before you can configure any other modules. However if you are happy with the default options then these will run ok.
As mentioned ONLY 4.0 modules will run on XP this means that you won't be able to have you Startrek and Simpsons modules running.
For reasons not yet determined some of screensavers do appear to max the processor when running on Win XP
Microsoft's toolkit is supposed to assist with compatibility issues of various packages including Afterdark. I have tried various experiments and have yet to be convinced that it makes any difference. If you know otherwise then let me know.
